GARRETT STREET, EC1
Location Clerkenwell, Islington Size 8 flats 449sqm offices Client RCT Construction Implementation Tasou Associates Photos Morley Von Sternberg Partial redevelopment of the National Grid (now Cadent) operations site for Central London. The development replaces redundant NG offices on a narrow fronted (8.1m deep) part of the site facing onto Peartree Street with the main NG operations continuing behind. The new structure totals 5 storeys with 3 floors of residential above 2 floors of office space. The design consists of a brick gridded structure with large windows to maximise light across what is a very narrow street. Alternating bays designed with inset balconies and picture windows are set between timber screened elements enabling a sense of openness whilst providing privacy from the street. Subsequent development of the substantive part of the site behind that overlooks the Seward Street Park (a former medieval burial ground) comprises 5 storeys of office space designed in a phased approach to enable Cadent to continue to operate at ground together whilst development of the offices is carried out above. |
