The Lexington is a complete strip back, strip out and start again reworking of a 1960’s office block, last occupied by The Independent newspaper, into 89 flats and 4 shop units. Complex sections work to give all flats to the existing tower views across balconies looking over Bunhill Fields to the City.

The facade reticulates between cutbacks, grids, planes and transparency to create a lyrical backdrop to the City. Added height to the top floor allows double height duplex apartments with roof terraces hidden within the double curve of the new floating metal roof. The linear block along City Road picks up and turns round the metal roof and reverts to a harder brick façade to address noise and streetscape. A landscaped garden on top of 2 levels of parking is conceived as a giant horizontal abstract to look out onto.

The project won the 1999 Evening Standard Residential Development of The Year
